Primarily correspondence (1912-1919 and 1937) between Tompkins and his wife, Edna Jane (Christie) Tompkins reflecting both the quality of their often long distance relationship and larger historical events including the opening up of western Canada, Canada's participation in World War I, combat conditions at the front in World War I, and the Canadian campaign in Siberia; together with term paper, fragments of letters and notebook, material gathered by Stuart during his research on Maj. James MacKintosh Bell, material reflecting his research interests during his retirement, and letters of acknowledgment from universities and colleges around the world for donated copies of his book, The Secret War, 1914-1918, which was published posthumously in 1981.
